• Each paper is of 200 marks, with a provision of one-third negative marking for the wrong question.

• The marks in the first paper constitute the merit for the preliminary exam, while the CSAT is qualifying, in which a minimum of one-third marks is required to qualify.

• Only after passing the preliminary exam, the candidate is eligible for the second stage.

Phase II (Mains Exam)

• There are total nine question papers in this exam, each paper is of 3 hours duration.

• First paper: This question paper is compulsory in Indian language. It is of 300 marks in which minimum 25% marks have to be scored.

• Second question paper: This question paper is of English language. It is also of 300 marks, in which minimum 25% marks have to be obtained.

• Third paper: This paper is of essay type. This question paper is divided into two sections, in each section 4-4 questions are given. 1-1 question has to be attempted from each section, whose marks are worth 250.

• Question papers from four to seven: are of general studies, which are as follows-

Question Paper Subject Marks

  • Fourth paper: (General Studies-1) Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society 250 Marks
  • Paper five: (General Studies-2) Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations 250 marks
  • Sixth paper: (General Studies-3) Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) 250 Marks
  • Paper seven: (General Studies-IV) Ethics, Integrity and Attitude 250 Marks
  • Eighth and ninth question paper: Both these question papers are of any one optional subject. Candidates can choose any one subject listed by the Commission according to their interest. Each question paper is of 250-250 marks.
